Fees Update – July 2022

Please note that as of 1st July 2022, the existing gap fees for all doctors will be increased as follows:

  • Standard (non-concession) patients = $45 gap fee for all consultations (previously $40)
  • After-hours consultations (5pm-6pm Mon-Fri, or Saturday) for Children/Pension/Concession card holders = $25 gap fee (previously $20)

BULK-BILLING will remain available Monday to Friday, before 5pm, for:

  • Children<16yrs, and
  • Commonwealth Pensioner/Health care care holders

Why are doctor gap fees increasing all over Australia?

Due to the rapidly increasing costs of running a medical practice, and the fact that Medicare rebates have been under a prolonged freeze (5 years) and only now increasing at a very slow rate (1.6% increase in July 2022, compared to very high inflation rates), the gap must continue to increase if doctors are to continue providing quality health care and maintain a sustainable practice.

Bulk-billing (where only the Medicare rebate is paid directly to the doctor) provides less than 50% of the fee recommended by the Australian Medical Association (AMA) for a standard consultation, from which all other practice costs must be paid.

The majority of appointments with doctors at North Ryde Medical Centre will continue to be bulk-billed (children, pension card holders, concession card holders).
